James Boissett
Light and drama, tone and luminosity became the constant source of inspiration for one of the most pure of painting
mediums and I began to find these in the landscapes, cityscapes and around Sydney Harbour. I exercise the full range
of possibilities for watercolour – subtlety, strength, a full tonal range without the obvious use of other mediums
such as Gouache, Gesso or Acrylics.
The exploration of light has led me to the intrigue of the nocturnal world. At night the pulse of the city exudes
own nature and personality. Its inhabitants and denizens altogether different than their daytime alter-egos. Painting,
drawing or acquiring photographs at night is an adventure. I often choose nocturnal subjects (for eg Sydney Town Hall)
at times in the night when they are quite busy. This brings a certain risk with it. It’s useful to have a wall or a
bus shelter behind you to allow for easier identification of approaching “friends or foe”. This adds an edge to the
experience.
Observation and recording of the visual events as I scour the city and its alcoves and bars looking for “that” painting.
Sneaking into places where light has magically created the subject. Who knows who you may compromise with these images.
Identities blurred by the stroke of a brush for the sake of diplomacy.
Light is reflected and directed from a myriad of sources, - ambience and luminescence form the stage and the actors in
this richly coloured nocturnal tapestry..
