ARTISTS PROFILE

Paul Souter

Paul is an Australian artist based in the Illawarra district near Sydney who started painting in 1991. He specialises in landscapes, townscapes and seascapes in oils and is interested in the effects of light especially the interplay of light and shadow that turn ordinary scenes into visual poetry. He has studied with Sydney artist Bob Baird and at the Julian Ashton School of Art in Sydney and West Dean College in the UK. Living near the ocean much of this work features seaside locations. Lonely windswept dunes sweeping beaches, soaring clouds and cobalt blue skies are, in his opinion, as much a part of Australia as the outback.

Lately his interest has also turned to foreign locales. The warm light colour, shadows and old world atmosphere of Nice, Rome, Croatia and other places providing a new source of inspiration. His favourite location is Venice where there is a merging of all his interests: light, shadow, colour, warmth, water and history.

His work is in private collections in Australia, France, USA, Britain, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, Singapore and Holland as well as in the collection of Danna Vale, Federal MP for Sutherland. Articles on his work have appeared in the Australian Artist magazine in September 1999 and April 2001. He was featured artist at the 2001 Oyster Bay Art Show and the 2005 Oakhill College Art Show both in Sydney. In 2001, his first solo show was held in Melbourne.
